OURF focuses most of its activities in Indonesia because most wild orangutans are found in that country. The orangutan's forest habitat in that country is declining rapidly due to large-scale conversion and poor forest management. Orangutans are dying in the process from causes both immediate (killed as pests or for pets) and gradual (increased competition or starvation). Therefore, in order for the orangutan to be saved from extinction, local Indonesians must become aware of the unique qualities of orangutans, their need for forest habitat to survive, the laws protecting them, and the consequences of illegally buying, selling or owning them.

Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization based in Santa Monica, CA. OURF partners with the Orang Utan Republik Education Initiative Indonesia (OUREII) in Jakarta and the Green Sumatra Foundation in North Sumatra (Medan).

The mission of the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) has remained true to its founding principles; to save the orangutans of Indonesia through conservation education, outreach initiatives, and innovative collaborative programs that inspire and call people to action.
