PEN/Faulkner issues the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, which is one of the most prestigious prizes in American letters, and which has helped establish Washington as a nationally recognized literary center. In addition, PEN/Faulkner issues the PEN/Malamud award to honor excellence in the short story, runs a Writers in Schools program that connects authors to the next generation of readers, and hosts an annual Reading Series in conjunction with the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC.
